Challenging the Male-Centric Model: Correcting the Failures in Women’s Health
As Dr. Alyson McGregor explains in Sex Matters: How Male-Centric Medicine Endangers Women’s Health—and What We Can Do About It, “Women are different from men in every way, from their chromosomes on up. The medical practice of differentiating women from men according to their reproductive organs alone is both reductionist and, as it turns out, hugely problematic―but the male-centric model of medicine is so pervasive in our health care systems, procedures, and philosophy that many don’t even realize it exists. In this age of technology and medical advancement, most people simply assume that women’s differences are already being taken into account—yet nothing could be further from the truth.”
Women’s health has long been misunderstood and underfunded, which is why it remains a core pillar of Quorum’s education and advocacy efforts in 2024.
To help us all better understand women’s health, Quorum has been partnering with recent HOW Forum speaker, Marjorie Jenkins, MD and her colleagues, Dr. Alyson McGregor and Anca Griffiths, on their new women’s health initiative, OM Health.
