Quorum women take action with organizations that are meaningful to them…
Taking action is a core value of our community. In November, we asked members to submit the names of organizations that are meaningful to them. It’s no surprise that women in Quorum support a wide array of organizations and causes. To name a few…
Nana Adae
The Mission Continues: Nana is a founding member of The Mission Continues, an organization that empowers veterans facing the challenge of adjusting to life at home to find new missions.
Amy Ho
Cherie Blair Foundation for Women: The foundation’s mission is to empower women to start, grow and sustain successful businesses, so they can redefine the future for themselves and their societies. “Participating as a mentor shows me what kind of impact I can make beyond borders and meet an amazing entrepreneur.”
Chinatown YMCA: “I gained so much growing up here and now I get to pay if forward.”
Lynne Murphy-Rivera
Help for Ntoma Its mission is to provide support for the care and education of orphaned children in Ntoma/Tanzania and to give them a stable economic foundation to become self-sufficient within their community and beyond.
“When my neighbor and friend, Martin Bertels told me the story of his mother (Waltraud Bertels) establishing a charitable foundation to secure the long-term support of an orphanage in Ntoma, I was moved. This organization amplifies what it means to be a Woman of Action.
Waltraud Bertels is a retired nurse and midwife in Germany who traveled to Tanzania to work in a remote hospital. While there she traveled to the village of Ntoma’s orphanage to take an infant whose mother had just passed away. She found the orphanage in extreme disrepair, strapped for funds and close to being shut down. When she finished her work at the rural hospital, she went back to Germany and started raising money to support the orphanage.”
Janet Odgis
Women Presidents Organization “We act as a sort of Board of Directors and help members process issues. We share information like connections, resources and our experiences. We support each other’s growth, make referrals and help in networking.”
Michele Olton
No Limits Café “It’s a lunchtime café my dear friends started in my town that employs adults with intellectual disabilities. It trains them to be able to work at other local restaurants as well. To help a group of people who don’t have a voice by supporting them with meaningful work, inclusion and love is everything!”
Patricia Roberts
Council of Urban Professionals “Its mission is to inspire, elevate and empower the next generation of diverse business and civic leaders and women. I was a 2012 CUP Fellow and have remained actively engaged since.”
Meg Sullivan
Child HELP Partnership HELP’s mission is to better protect and heal children from trauma and its emotional impact. Quorum Advisory Board member Elissa Brown is the ED of this organization.
Diane Silverman
JABA (Jefferson Area Board on Aging) JABA is a non-profit area agency on aging serving seniors, caregivers, and their families in Central Virginia. Quorum member, Marta Keane is JABA’s CEO.
Service Dogs of Virginia Service Dogs of Virginia is a non-profit organization that raises, trains, and places dogs to assist people with disabilities and provides facility dogs for courthouses, counseling centers, and other therapeutic settings. “Fostering the dogs as they train to go into service brings a great deal of joy to me and my family. Though there are always a few tears when it’s time to say goodbye, it’s always made up for by hearing stories of how each dog impacts the lives of the individuals and organizations they go on to serve.”
Apologies for any that we left out!
